About the Site's Author:

My name is Steve McGill, I’m forty-one years old, and I’ve been at Ravenscroft School – a private K-12 school in Raleigh, NC, where I am currently in my fourteenth year. I teach Creative Writing, English Literature, American Literature, African-American Literature, and serve as an assistant track coach in charge of the hurdlers and sprinters. I also coach USATF youth track in the summers. Athletes I've worked with include Johnny Dutch (13.46, 36.09, 50.07), Booker Nunley (13.88, 37.99), Wayne Davis (13.65), and Cameron Akers (14.21, 38.74). I've also coached several independent school state champions on my school team.

Besides coaching and teaching, I am also a free-lance writer. I have written articles for websites such as trackshark.com and ncpreptrack.net, and I regularly contribute track articles to blackathlete.net. Also, I'm currently working on a biography of Rodney Milburn, 1972 Olympic high hurdle champion. I am currently working on the last of twelve chapters, so I'm also done the first draft. After that, I will need to go back and do some more research and interviews to fill in some gaps, and then begin editing and revising and looking for a publisher. I'm feeling good about what I've gotten done so far; I'm feeling like it's going to be a really good book.

My personal athletic career was quite humble. My personal best in the 110’s in high school was a hand-timed 14.7, and my best time in college was a 15.63. In the long hurdles, my pr’s were 40.4 in the 300’s in high school, and 57.5 in the 400’s in college. I started hurdling as a sophomore in high school, when my coach, noticing my height (5’11”) and work ethic, suggested that I give them a try. I enjoyed hurdling immensely from the very beginning, and truly fell in love with the sport a year later, when my coach showed me a tape of Renaldo Nehemiah’s world record 12.93 victory over Greg Foster in Zurich. My love and passion for the hurdles has guided and given purpose to my life ever since.
