NCHSAA North Carolina Indoor State Championships
On 2/10/07, members of Hurdles First Track Club represented their
school teams at the North Carolina Indoor State Championship meet at UNC-Chapel
Hill. Johnny Dutch, competing for Clayton High School,
led the way with a first-place finish in the 55m hurdles. His time of

Equally impressive was the performance of Wayne Davis,

Dutch in 7.32. His time makes him the top sophomore hurdler in the nation,
and the fourth-ranked 55m high school hurdler in the nation. Finishing
sixth in the same race was Booker Nunley, competing
for Garner High School. Nunley's time of 7.51 was also a new personal
best. Chris Herring, running for Knightdale High School,
finished 9th overall in a new personal best of 7.87. Dutch and Davis will
be competing at the Simplot Games in Idaho next weekend, and Dutch, Davis,
and Nunley will all be competing at the Nike National Indoor Championships

USATF National Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships
On July 25 - 30, The Hurdles First Track Club concluded its 2006 season

all the more commendable.

the Intermediate Boys 400m hurdles, James Robinson finished
15th overall (57.90) and Nunley finished 19th overall (59.10). In the

Russell Blunt East Coast Invitational
On 7/21/06 - 7/23/06, members of the Hurdles First Track Club competed
at the Russell Blunt East Coast Invitational at Duke University's Wallace
Wade Stadium in Durham, NC. We competed very well and our athletes came
up with some big performances. Aaron Wiggins won the
Young Men's pole vault (4.50) and was named Young Men's meet MVP for his
efforts. Johnny Dutch won the Young Men's 110m high hurdles
(13.93) after setting the meet record in the prelims with a 13.66, his
second-fastest time of the year. Christopher Herring finished
twelfth in the prelims of the 110s (15.71).
Wayne Davis and Booker Nunley finished 1-2 in
the Intermediate Boys 110m high hurdles (14.24 and 14.37 respectively).
Nunley also finished second in the 400m hurdles (55.86),
and James Robinson finished fourth in that race (57.45).
Robinson also finished 12th in the 400m run (52.34).
David Coe was Hurdles First's only double winner of the
meet, as he earned first-place finishes in the Youth Boys 200m hurdles
(26.43) and the 100m hurdles (13.94). Malcolm Nunley finished
seventh in the 100m dash (12.04) after tying his personal best of 11.86
in the prelims. He also finished fifth in the 200m dash (24.02), and third
in the 400m dash (53.35 ).
Trevon Sanders finished third in the Midget Boys 80m
hurdles (13.37). Trevon and his brother Marquise Sanders
finished tied for fifth in the high jump (4-06).
Ironically, in spite of our small numbers, Hurdles First did pretty well
in the team scoring. We ended up sixth in the Young Men's division, seventh
in the Intermediate Boys division, and fifth in the Youth Boys division,
although we had no more than three athletes in any of those divisions.
On the girls' side, Jacquanda Wright finished seventh
overall in the prelims of the Intermediate Girls 100m hurdles (15.54).
Dannielle Davis finished eighth in the Youth Girls 100m

Our next and last meet of the season will be the USATF Junior Olympic
National Championships in Baltimore, MD on the last weekend in July. Team
members who will compete at Nationals are: Aaron Wiggins,
Wayne Davis, Booker Nunley, James
Robinson, David Onuscheck, David Coe, and Dannielle
Davis. Contrary to what was reported earlier on this website,
Johnny Dutch will not be competing at this meet. Competing
at the Caribbean Scholastic Invitational instead of the Region III Championships
made him ineligible for Nationals.
Caribbean Scholastic Invitational
On 7/8/06, Hurdles First team member Johnny Dutch competed
at the Caribbean Scholastic Invitational in Carolina, Puerto Rico. Dutch
won the 400m hurdles in 51.72. He was also on the winning 4x100 relay
team (40.27) and 4x400 relay team (3:12.50). Dutch's teammates on both
relays were Trey Harts, Charles Clark, and Karjuan Williams. The 110m
hurdles were not contested because Dutch was the only entry in the event.

USATF Region III Championships
On 7/6/06 - 7/9/06, members of the Hurdles First Track Club competed
at the USATF Region III Junior Olympic Championships at Mill Creek High
School in Hoschton, Georgia. The top three finishers in each event qualify
for the national championships, which will be held in Baltimore, MD at
the end of July. Hurdles First had several athletes qualify for nationals:
Aaron Wiggins finished second in the Young Mens pole
vault (4.35m).
Wayne Davis led a Hurdles First 1-2 finish in the Intermediate
Boys 110m hurdles. Davis' time of 14.18 is the second-fastest ever run
for this age group at this meet, bettered only by teammate Johnny Dutch's
14.00 in 2005. Booker Nunley came in second behind Davis
in 14.30. Both Davis and Nunley set new personal bests.
In the Intermediate Boys 400m hurdles, Nunley captured first in 56.31,
so he will be going to Baltimore in two events. James Robinson,
after leading the race for most of the way, held on for third and a trip
to Baltimore, crossing the line in 56.68.
In the Intermediate Boys high jump, Doug Onuscheck took
first with a jump of 1.90 (6-3). Onuscheck won a long, exhausting jump-off
tie-breaker to secure the victory.
In the Youth Boys age group, David Coe qualified for
nationals in two events. He won the 200m hurdles in 26.50, and finished
second in the 100m hurdles in 13.99.
In the Youth Girls age group, Dannielle Davis qualified
for nationals in two events. She finished third in the 200m hurdles (29.50),
and triple jump (9.84m). Dannielle also set a personal best in the 100m
hurdles (15.67), good for sixth place.
Johnny Dutch did not compete at the regional championships,
but will be competing at nationals in the Young Mens 110m and 400m hurdles.
We are also very proud of the team members who competed at regionals but
didn't qualify for nationals. Malcolm Nunley finished
fourth in the Youth Boys 400m dash and seventh in the 200m dash, a very
good showing for his first year against this level of competition. Jacquanda
Wright set a new personal best of 15.44 en route to a sixth-place
finish in the Intermediate Girls 100m hurdles. Jacquanda is also in her
first year of youth track, and has shown tremendous improvement over the
course of the summer. Chris Snype finished eighth in
the Young Mens 100m dash (10.98). Josh Dunston finished
ninth overall in the Youth Boys 200m hurdles (29.66). Trevon Sanders
